Diffuse return is the share of the light landing on the surface that comes back; the grade is the share absorbed. Higher grade: deeper black, more projector.

Optics, measured

The deep end
The grade is the share of light the surface absorbs: OP 0.8 returns 20% of whatever lands on it, the projector's image included, and drinks the rest. Pair a deep grade with a powerful projector and the picture stays legible with the lights up. The opaque back blocks all light from behind, so structure, rigging and fixtures behind the screen disappear.
Between the stops · A Cluster is a surface dialed to order between or past the standing grades (OP·73*): a dedicated run, a longer road, a higher cost. Name the black you need.
